Graceland def. Dordt 4-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender softball team surrendered two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost a 4-3 decision to Graceland in non-conference softball in Tucson, Arizona on Friday.
Dordt plated all three of its runs in the third inning when Rachel Evavold doubled in Marissa Vanden Berg and Jessica Oules later scored on a wild pitch. Hailey Heeringa followed with a single that scored Evavold and put Dordt up 3-0.
Graceland responded immediately with two runs on two hits and an error and trailed 3-2 heading into the final inning. Dordt threatened to add to the lead in the top of the seventh when the Defenders stranded two runners leaving the Yellow Jackets down just one run. A ground out started the bottom of the seventh but a single followed for Graceland and a bobbled grounder put runners at first and second. Tianna Soodsma struck out the next batter but a double followed and both runners scored to end the game.
Tianna Soodsma absorbed the complete game loss and struck out nine with four runs allowed—two of them earned.
Rachel Evavold had a pair of doubles and Hailey Heeringa also had a single and double. Both were credited with a run batted in.
Natalie Vos had a single and a walk.
Dordt had a 7-6 hits advantage. Both teams were charged with two errors.
