HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt College baseball team began conference play with an 8-5 loss to Morningside on Thursday. After two days of canceled games due to poor weather conditions, the Defenders were ready to get under way.
Isaac VanderHart started on the mound for Dordt and held the Mustangs scoreless in the first inning. Dordt went three-and-out in their first at bat.
Morningside broke the deadlock in the top of the second. Shea Patterson scored after Levi Davidson hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
Dordt tied the game in the bottom of the third. Logan Cline hit a grounder to third that scored Dillon Branderhorst.
VanderHart forced a three-and-out in the top of the fourth and the Dordt offense responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to stretch their lead to 2-1.
Austin Pullar started the inning with a triple and David Laurenti hit a grounder in the following at bat to bring Pullar home.
Morningside took the lead back in the top of the third with three runs. Sam Huska hit a fly ball to left field and scored Carter Kratz. Nic Metcalf scored off of a Andrew Kasperbauer double. Kasperbauer scored the final run after Jordan Pierce singled to left.
The Defenders responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at four. A dropped fly ball by Kasperbauer scored Jason Holwerda and Parker Hamann.
Morningside’s Patterson scored the lone run in the sixth inning to give the Mustangs a 5-4 lead. They managed three more runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-4 advantage.
Cline scored in the bottom of the seventh for Dordt, but it wasn’t enough and Morningside took the victory.
Lucas Nelson had two hits to lead Dordt.
Isaac VanderHart, Jadon Vander Molen and Kevin Fokkema all pitched for Dordt.
Spencer Wyant earned the victory for the Mustangs.
Four different players had two hits for Morningside.
Dort will play Morningside again on Friday at 11:00 and 1:00 p.m. CT.
