Dordt defeats Dakota Wesleyan 8-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
A four run seventh inning broke open a 4-3 battle and sent the Defender softball team to its second sweep in as many days.
Dordt started the scoring in the top of the third inning with four runs on five hits and capitalized on an error to get the runs in. Rachel Evavold delivered a double to score two runs and the Defenders added two more on a throwing error on a fielder’s choice for a 4-0 lead.
Wesleyan responded with three runs on three hits in the third inning and the score remained 4-3 as the Tigers threatened again in the home half of the fifth inning but came up empty.
Dordt put the game away with four runs on five hits in the top of the seventh. Heeringa doubled in two runs and later scored on a Carley De Roin single. Kenzie Cunard delivered a single to plate De Roin and the inning ended with Dordt up 8-3.
Wesleyan threatened again in the seventh but came up empty as the game ended with the bases loaded on a ground out into a fielder’s choice.
Rachel Evavold was 3-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in with a double and two singles.
Carley De Roin was 3-4 with a run batted in and three singles.
Marissa Vanden Berg, Jessica Oules and Hailey Heeringa all had two hits with Heeringa scoring one and knocking in two.
Rachel Evavold was the winner and allowed three earned runs on nine hits with on strikeout and three bases on balls.
Dordt had a 13-9 hits advantage.
Both teams had an error.
Dordt is 9-9 overall and 4-0 in the GPAC.
Dakota Wesleyan is 6-18 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC.
Dordt is scheduled to host Midland on Saturday at 1:00.
