Dordt defeats Dakota State 80-57

The Dordt women’s basketball team secured an 80-57 win over the Dakota State Lady T’s on Friday afternoon in a non-conference game hosted by Northwestern in Orange City, Iowa.

Dordt trailed 7-4 with four minutes gone in the first quarter but back to back baskets by Mari Smitsdorff followed by two free throws by the post-player put Dordt up 10-7 and Dordt never trailed again.  A Payton Harmsen three-point shot extended the lead and an Ebby Prewitt lay up at the buzzer gave Dordt a 10 point lead at the quarter break 21-11.

The Defenders controlled the second quarter with a 21 point lead on an Annie Rhinesmith basket for a 37-16 advantage and Dordt was up 46-24 at halftime when Harmsen hit her third three-point basket of the half just before the clock expired.

Dordt started the third quarter with an 11-0 run and they didn’t allow Dakota State a basket for the first 6:16 of the half as Dordt’s lead grew to 57-24.  With the outcome no longer in doubt Dakota State got to within 18 points before the Defenders settled for an 80-57 win.

“We certainly had a little rust. I thought we played hard and I was really happy with our defensive effort but our offensive efficiency in the third quarter was really poor.   We started forcing some things and we didn’t shoot it all that well but I think that’s some first game back things. Hopefully when we come back and play Trinity tomorrow we can clean up some of those things.”

Dordt is 12-4 while Dakota State falls to 1-11.

Dordt faces Trinity Christian on Saturday at noon at Orange City.
