Hastings def. Dordt 81-79
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hastings closed its game with the Dordt Defenders on a 9-0 run and stole an 81-79 victory in Hastings on Saturday afternoon.
Dordt took a 43-40 lead at halftime after a Garrett Franken three-point basket with a minute left after Dordt had led by as many as 11 points in the half.
Dordt extended the lead to 61-51 on a Ben Gesink basket with 12:05 left in the game and the lead was still eight with 7:12 left in the game after a Zach Bussard free throw.
Hastings cut the lead to three but Dordt responded to lead 79-72 with 2:06 after a Ben Gesink basket.
The Broncos got a three-point basket and then converted a pair of free throws. A turnover with 1:06 led to a breakaway basket for Hastings. Dordt missed on a three-point attempt with :45 left and Hastings got a basket by Bart Hiscock in the lane for an 81-79 lead.
Dordt had a shot near the basket that missed with :06 left and the rebound was out of bounds. Dordt had two more shots in the lane after an inbounds play but didn’t convert and lost 81-79.
Dordt converted 29-72 field goals and 5-18 three-point shots. Dordt made 16-23 free throws.
Hastings made 32-73 field goals, 9-33 three-point shots. The Broncos made 8-12 free throws.
Dordt had a 45-39 rebounding advantage.
Both teams had 11 turnovers.
Garrett Franken had 19 points and nine rebounds and Josh Van Lingen had 14 points and nine rebounds.
Ben Gesink scored 13 with four rebounds and Alec Henrickson had 10 points. Both Gesink and Henrickson head four assists each
Ben Wahlberg had 18 points and six rebounds and Bart Hiscock had 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Dordt will travel to face Briar Cliff as the no. 6 seed in the GPAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday, February 20 at 7:00. The winner faces the Jamestown-Hastings winner on Saturday, February 23 in the semifinals.
